Bali 2025 A day in Ubud, The Monkey Forest and a Balinese Fire Dance

A macaque monkey, Monkey Forest, Ubud

On Sunday morning we woke up and the sun was shining.

We had our breakfast, fruit jouce, scrambled egg, toast & jam, by the hotel pool.

The temperature was high 20s and the humidity was high.

We were staying near the cultural centre of Ubud, on the north East of Bali island. Ubud is a town, but never too far from rice fields. There is also a forest on the edge of Ubud town, where semi-wild macaque monkeys live.

We decided to visit the Monkey Forest & Ubud after breakfast. We travelled to the Monkey Forest in a local taxi. The taxi had air-conditioning.

The Monkey Forest is on the edge of Ubud, it is a sanctuary for the long tailed maceque monkeys. The monkeys are allowed to live in the wild, and humans provide food for them. The forest is popular with tourists and locals.

Kevin and I had a coffee in an air-conditioned cafe in the forest.

We then walked into the town and after a beer in a local bar we had a massage.

We spent the afternoon in a cafe/restaurant where we had a pancake dessert and a soft drink.

In the evening we attended a Balinese Kecak Fire & Trance Dance.

Balinese dances tell a story, usually "good over evil". The music is provided by a choir of people chanting and some are playing percussion instruments. The dancers wear amazing costumes depicting majestic animals. The fire dance was performed at dusk.

We returned to our hotel by taxi..
